Its freshwater environment plays host to a wide variety of birdlife. Around the calm waters of this lake, the gray catbird, Bonaparte's gull, hooded merganser, and common tern make their homes. In fall and winter, the common loon joins this throng. Winter also makes this park one of the premier places in the US to see the bald eagle. Bear River Bay Follow the I-15 to exit #363, and thirteen miles later you reach the start of the Auto Tour Route for this amazing site teeming with birdlife. In this vast area of more than 142,000 acres, you are certain to see various species from waterfowl to wading birds. Swans, ibis, plovers, stilts, teals, and pelicans nest here. In winter the bald eagle, canvasbacks, and gulls arrive, and the snow goose and common tern visit on migration. Hyrum State Park A 450-acre reservoir, surrounded by 265 acres of park plays host to common and not so common seasonal visitors. Summer brings the western grebe and bank swallows, whilst winter is the time for the common loon, Pacific loon, and the Caspian tern. Roadside viewing is recommended for spring and summer, but regardless of season, you will certainly find opportunities to enjoy this idyllic spot and its feathered visitors and residents. Wellsville Mountain Raptor Migration This ridged area is perfect for birdwatchers wanting to combine solitude and exercise. Peaceful and quiet, the 1/2 mile walk along the top of the west ridge provides excellent views. Rosy-finches and rock wrens can be seen, but from August to November, the true stars of the show are the eagles and migratory hawks to travel to these barren, chilly slopes. Annual counts from 1977 have recorded 2,400 to 5,600 raptors visiting here on their migration from more than seventeen species. Deseret Land and Livestock Ranch A working ranch privately owned by the Church of the Latter-Day Saints, this 220,000-acre area encompasses a wide variety of vegetation and abundant water supplies. Amongst this beautiful landscape, approximately two hours east of Brigham, more than 260 species live and thrive. Two thousand waterfowl from numerous species can be found here, together with a large population of the endangered greater sage-grouse, Additional species that have found sanctuary here include 30 bald eagle pairs and 3 ferruginous hawk pairs. Willard Bay State Park The perfect place for boating, swimming, or fishing, Willard Bay State Park is a must for residents of Brigham City, given its location is just a short drive to the south. The warm, sunny waters of Willard Bay are the main attraction, while shady cottonwood trees line the shoreline and provide some much-needed shade for the campsite in summer. During the winter months, the area becomes a magnet for birdwatchers, who gather to try and catch a glimpse of the majestic bald eagles that live. Several boat ramps line the shores of the lake, although they may be closed due to low water levels. The lake also has strict measures in place to avoid contamination by invasive quagga muscles, requiring boaters to decontaminate their vessel if they've been in infected water. Hyrum State Park Situated to the northeast of Brigham City, close to the town of Hyrum from which it gets its name, Hyrum State Park centers around Hyrum Reservoir, a major fishing center for the area. Anglers come here from miles around to fish for bass, trout, perch, and bluegill. Aside from fishing, the park also provides excellent opportunities for a variety of water sports. It also makes a great basecamp for exploring the area, thanks to its location close to popular local hiking and biking trails. These campgrounds are some of the best places to get away from the rat race and enjoy the beauty of nature while sleeping under the stars. North Fork Campground A perfect example of Utah's pristine forests and glens, North Fork Park and Campground is perfect for rediscovering the beauty of nature. The area is especially good for hiking, with trails leading as far as West Bowery and past several waterfalls. The trails are mainly used for hiking, but several are used as mountain biking trails. The campgrounds are well equipped with fire rings, picnic sites, and running water over 181 individual sites. The campground can accommodate horses, with several corrals that can be used by campers. Individual sites can be reserved by calling the park office. 2. Pioneer Campground Pioneer Campground is one of many small campgrounds located in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, a sprawling natural area to the northeast of Brigham City. The campground is typical of the area, with very few amenities and only 17 single sites. While potable water is available at the campground there are no hookups or waste stations, and toilets are limited to a single vault toilet. That being said, stopping at this shady campsite, amongst mature forest trees is a truly magical experience. It's quite likely that you will have the site to yourself, allowing you to truly appreciate the peace of the forest. 3. Hyrum Lake State Park Located near the town of Hyrum, UT, Hyrum Lake State Park has many campsites available on a first-come-first-served basis, with boat ramps and courtesy docks that make it a great spot for boating enthusiasts. The park is open from 6 am to 10 pm, and the gate attends only accepts cash or checks. The lake is also perfect for fishing, but a valid license must be obtained first. The campgrounds have full amenities, including a dumps station, restrooms complete with showers, and both standard and hookup sites. 4. Willard Bay State Park Located on the tranquil waters of Willard Bay Reservoir, Willard bay state park is perfect for water skiing, boating, fishing, or swimming. The campsite is surrounded by shady cottonwood trees and is one of the few places where visitors can view eagles nesting during the winter months. There are two marinas nearby to the north and south that offer all the facilities you could need for enjoying the bay. The campgrounds are spread out along the eastern shore of the lake, and offer full amenities to campers, such as electricity and water. These are just some of the best places to camp nearby, but there are plenty of smaller sites to discover, so head out there yourself and see what you can find.
