The battery has two main functions: it provides the initial electrical charge that starts the combustion process, and it supplies power to your Chevy’s systems when the engine is switched off. As time passes, the battery will become worn or damaged and need repair or replacement. As your Chevy dealer, we want to tell you a few signs you need to visit us for a new car battery.

Slow Starting

The battery sends an electrical charge to the starter when you push the start button, which cranks the engine. The crank initiates the combustion process, and your engine should come to life within seconds. If your engine takes longer to start than it used to, or you hear laboring sounds, you have a battery problem.

The battery can wear down due to age as its storage capacity gradually decreases, and it can’t contain enough power to start the engine with one charge. It can also be affected by slow recharging from the alternator, loose battery connectors, or several other issues. We’ll examine your battery and repair the charging issue or install a new battery if necessary.

Battery Light

The battery-shaped light on your dash illuminates as a warning that something is wrong with your electrical system. Sensors are connected to the battery, alternator, wiring, and other system components. These sensors can identify even the smallest issue with their connected component, and they will immediately inform your computer.

The computer receives the message and logs it with an error code, then illuminates the warning light. Our technicians will connect your computer to a diagnostic scanner that can read the computer’s error codes. Once we know the source of the problem, we’ll repair it, and the warning light will switch off.

Corroded Terminals

Your battery has positive and negative terminals, and they’re used to connect the battery to the electrical system. The battery connectors are tightly screwed onto the terminals, and they allow electricity to pass into and out of the battery. If you pop the hood and notice a white, gray, or green salt-like substance around the terminals, your terminals are corroding.

This corrosion is formed by hydrogen sulfide, a toxic and corrosive chemical created by mixing hydrogen vapor from a weakening battery and sulfide molecules that are naturally present in the engine. Hydrogen sulfide is drawn to the battery terminals and will rapidly start corroding them. We can clean corrosion, but it will return. We’ll replace your battery and check the battery connectors for any damage.

We stock various batteries in the correct size for your vehicle and can install a replacement in minutes. Contact our service department today at Hansen Motor Co. in Brigham City, UT.
